What Reiki is
Reiki translates to ‘universal lifeforce energy’. Rei is Japanese for ‘universal’, ‘spirit’, or ‘spiritual wisdom’, and Ki means ‘vital energy’, ‘lifeforce energy’, or ‘energy’ (like Qi or Chi in Chinese).
Reiki is considered an energy healing technique, where universal lifeforce energy (the vital force that flows through all living things) is channeled in order to encourage the recipient’s innate self-healing processes and promote a sense of relaxation, well-being and comfort.
The patient/client sits or lies down, fully clothed, and the practitioner places hands on the body in various hand positions, acting as a channel for the Reiki to come through.
Reiki Master
I am a Reiki Master Practitioner of the original Usui Shiki Ryoho lineage. What this means is that I am an experienced and intuitive Usui Reiki practitioner that has also undergone further training and attunement to Master degree level. I qualified as a Reiki practitioner 25 years ago and so my practice has developed significantly over time, and is very dynamic. I have learnt to follow my instincts during treatment sessions and be guided to channel Reiki where I feel it is most needed.
This is generally carried out as a hands-on therapy, where I place my hands onto various positions on the recipient’s head, body or limbs and let them rest there for as long as is necessary. It is possible to carry the therapy out hands-off (without touching) the recipient, and we can do this if you would be more comfortable, or if I think it would be more helpful for you to receive that way.
Receiving Reiki
The total therapy session will be a minimum of 90 minutes, and will be blended to suit your needs. Reiki will be at the heart of it and can either form a part, or the majority, of the session.
Where it forms part of it, the Reiki healing is usually towards the end of the session so that it enhances and builds on the work we have done during the session. When it forms most of the session, we’ll have a short chat first before immersing ourselves fully in this spiritually enhancing and uplifting, deep-dive Reiki experience.
What to expect
Reiki is a beautiful, all-encompassing, ritual treatment.
Lying down is the usual position for you and you remain fully clothed. While you make yourself comfortable ready for your Reiki treatment I will explain my approach fully and, when you are happy, settled and ready, and with music playing quietly in the background, we will begin.
I may sometimes ask you to turn over during the Reiki treatment but that isn’t always necessary. There will be a focus on any specific issues you may have mentioned at the beginning of your session, but as well as that I will be sensing where I’m drawn to during the treatment – where the energy feels to be less free-flowing or otherwise irregular – and I may spend more time on some points than others.
I sometimes pick up insights during this process and will share them with you if I do; as I said, it’s very dynamic. In this way your Reiki session can be either interactive – as much a meditation as a treatment – or simply a complete, total, deeply restorative and balancing relaxation, as you wish.
Reiki with spirituality
As a seasoned traveller on various spiritual pathways I think I’ve earned my stripes. The most important thing that I have found is not to embark on your journey in isolation. That isn’t to say that spiritual seekers don’t require a good deal of time alone, in quiet contemplation, because we absolutely do, and possibly more than most, but finding community amongst like-minded people is an undeniable gift. That has been my experience so far, and I’d like to help you with yours.
I’ve created my Reiki with spirituality combination with that in mind. Each session – whether you come for one or for many – will be tailored to you and your place on your own path. Just being within that important shared space – nurturing our spiritual growth and fostering a like-minded sense of community with each other, while offering mentorship for you, if you need it – can feel liberating. Are you ready for that?
This is a 90 min (minimum) time where you and I can talk about and explore your beliefs and dreams, one-to-one, in safety and security, with compassion and understanding. You can ask questions, or share your experiences, or we can talk about the things that make you into the person you are, that is, about your own true, beautiful spirit, and how to nurture that. That’s the crucial third element I speak about on my Home page, so often ignored. You don’t have to ignore it anymore. This is the session for you, if you’re ready, and there’s a Reiki treatment at the end to consolidate the learning and connect the three elements into the whole: mind with body, body with spirit, spirit with mind.
Reiki with EFT
If you’ve come across this amazing technique before, you will have some idea already of how quickly it can bring about changes in how we feel. EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique and it’s used to help to transform so-called ‘negative’ emotions – although I struggle with that term as emotions are like little messengers, and the negative messages often serve a useful purpose in alerting us to what needs to change in our lives; but sometimes they get stuck and we don’t know what the message is anyway, and that’s where EFT comes in. We’ll do that together, and when we’ve finished all the tapping and moved the stuck energy, a beautiful Reiki session which is going to work along a similar, energetic theme but, oh, so gently. You’ll notice the difference and can continue to practise tapping at home if you like – it’s a skill for life.
A bit about the origins of Usui Reiki Ryoho
The form of Reiki I practise is the original Usui Reiki Ryoho. Mikao Usui was the founding father of the Japanese healing modality we now know as Reiki. He rediscovered and developed it into a healing practice more than a century ago, opening his first clinic in Tokyo where he used it to treat people and to teach the technique to others. This was particularly significant during the Great Kantō earthquake when he and his students volunteered their help to countless victims, which earned him an honorary doctorate from the Emperor of Japan. He is respectfully known as Usui Sensei. Sensei is Japanese for ‘Teacher’ or ‘Master’ and is a title bestowed on the most skillful practitioners and people who have reached a high level of mastery in their professional field.
